The makeup storage you NEED!

Gold Coast Beauty Spotlight: The Makeup Box Shop The Makeup Box Shop

Katie Wockner is the brains behind Gold Coast-based online store, The Makeup Box Shop - a leader in makeup storage. If you're ever wanted a way to store your makeup without worrying about if it's fallen into the pits of your 'old school' drawers, you need one of these makeup boxes! Katie has a range of storage solutions on offer, with pieces starting at just $18! These sleek designs wipe clean and are perfect to organise lipsticks, blush and bronzer compacts, beauty tools and much more - think organisation at its finest!

Being Australia's first business to offer this kind of storage means they've grown from offering one type of storage box to now offering over 40 specifically designed items. They're custom made to store makeup items such as MAC eye shadows, Urbay Decay palettes, Bare Minerals products and more. To get to know how this amazing brand came about, I had a chat to Katie about all things The Makeup Box Shop, what's next for the brand and business advice for Gold Coaster's!

How did you come up with the idea of creating makeup boxes?

I wanted a better way to store my own makeup, as I was often repurchasing an item I already owned but couldn’t locate it as it was pushed to the back of my bathroom drawer. After searching various stores I couldn’t locate exactly what I was after, so I created it!

What made you take the leap and start The Makeup Box Shop?

I saw there was a gap in the retail market for this particular type of product. I thought if I had wanted it, chances are other women would too!

How did people respond to your makeup boxes?

I’ve been lucky enough to work with brands such as NYX Cosmetics, Shanghai Suzy Lipsticks as well as a variety of beauty bloggers and makeup artists. The response from the beauty industry was great from the beginning; I plan to branch out to wholesale stockists in the coming months.

Do you see yourself expanding on your current product range?

Initially I only offered one style and size of Makeup Box, now there are in excess of 40 styles of various products and the range will continue to grow.

What’s your personal favourite product and why?

I currently use the mirrored range of makeup storage for my own collection. It’s the newest addition to the range and I love the look of the mirrored finish.

What’s the most popular product you stock?

Our largest storage pieces are the most popular. It seems there are many women with large makeup collections that need to be organised!

What sort of challenges have you faced with starting your own brand? How have you overcome them?

Initially it’s scary to think about leaving a secure full time job to go out on your own, however, I was lucky enough to be able to slowly transition from the corporate world to being a small business owner.

What advice would you give to Gold Coasters wanting to start their own business?

Start with lots of research, but also don’t let doubt or procrastination stop you. If you spend time researching and still think you can make it work, go for it!

Fast 5

When you’re not selling amazing beauty boxes, what are you doing?

Enjoying the Gold Coast weather with my husband, family or friends and Labrador.

Where is your favourite place to shop on the Gold Coast?

I enjoy a stroll through Pacific Fair at the beginning of each season to see what the latest fashions are. Although, I also love to support the small businesses along James Street in Burleigh. For amazing homewares, a hidden gem is Bunglaow Interiors in Runaway Bay.

Where’s your go-to spot on the Gold Coast?

I love grabbing a coffee and going for a walk along the esplanade at Paradise Point or Biggera Waters.

What are your top 3 favourite beauty products?

Typically I’ll reach for a tinted moisturiser or BB cream, crème bronzer and black mascara.

If you could gift any celebrity a makeup box, who would you choose?

I’d have to choose Sophie Monk, not only because she’s a Gold Coast girl too, but she’s honest and doesn’t take herself too seriously.
