Cast your minds back to a few months ago, when it was revealed that Claire Foy was paid a lot less than her on-screen husband Matt Smith, even though she was the lead in The Crown.
It was then reported that she would be getting more than AUD$350,000 in back pay to make up for it all.
It turns out that those reports weren’t true, because in a recent interview for her new film The Girl in The Spider’s Web, she revealed she didn’t receive any at all!
“That was what was reported that I was back-paid. I’ve never mentioned anything about it and neither have the producers. The fact that that is ‘fact’ is – not quite correct.
"Yes, it’s Netflix, but it’s a British production company. It happened at the same time as it was coming out with a lot of other people that there was a lot of pay inequality across the board – in the music industry, in journalism, in every industry. It’s across the board that it became part of a bigger conversation, which is an odd place to find yourself in.”
Although The Crown’s producer Suzanne Mackie revealed no one on the show would be “paid more than the queen,” they have not made the efforts to repair this disparity for past stars like Claire.
