New Zealand’s opposition leader has suggested the country should cut ties with Britain.

Opposition leader Jacinda Adern says she wants the nationa to have a debate on getting rid of the Queen as its head of state.

Labour’s Ms Adern told students at University of Waikato:

“I am a republican but you will find there are people in New Zealand who aren’t actively pursuing that change.

“It’s certainly not about my view of the monarchy but my view of New Zealand’s place in the world and carving out our own future. So that is what drives my sentiment.

Last year a referendum to remove the Union Jack from the New Zealand flag resulted in the country keeping the status quo.

Ms Adren will be the leader of the Labour Party when New Zealander heads to the voting booth later this month.

The 37-year-old has lead the party for just over a month and seen a surge in popularity dubbed “Jacinda-mania”, increasing the party’s popularity by 19 points.

Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull has also admitted he is a republican. Australia’s Labor party ,should it win the election due in 2019, has promised a referendum during its first year in office.
